My work is an ongoing dialogue about our ecological and human fragility, rooted in cognitive and spiritual exploration. I express this conversation through the canon of Dutch still life (Vanitas), wrapped in theatrical magical realism.
I contend that we are all intertwined expressions of one another and seek to translate this interconnectedness. My aspiration is to deepen our understanding and appreciation of human complexities, creating imaginative spaces and inviting us to look beyond mere facts, to transcend one-dimensional thinking and explore the intricate relationships, metaphors, and the in-between space (the whispers).
I create intimate plays, where head-like figures take center stage as chimerical beings, sometimes precariously balanced atop one another, nestled in botanical elements. This imaginative fusion of fauna and flora creates an emergent ecology—an evolution that envisions a symbiotic coexistence of nature and humanity. My hope is that we may trap the worst instincts of our past in the images and that they compel us to change. In this way, the work becomes a talisman, a human ritual that summons our worst impulses, where they become objects of contemplation and reflection.
I was born in Cuba in 1971 and migrated to the U.S in 1980 during the Mariel boatlift. I was raised in Miami and its early art scene. I spent lots of time in my dad’s art studio and visiting his friends’ studios. I was very fortunate to have had a village of very generous and kind individuals who supported me along the way.
My paintings and sculptures are an ongoing conversation about our ecological and human fragility anchored in a cognitive exploration and a spiritual introspection. All through the lens of the 17 th century Dutch Still Life (Vanitas), wrapped in a theatrical magical surrealism. My paintings are intimate plays in which ceramic heads often take center stage, but the rich
tapestry of color is the true protagonist. They are silent conversations with nature, a call for reciprocity and a celebration of our shared existence. This work is an analysis of the human condition and its capability to save itself from itself. You could say they are self-portraits of me, of us, trying to make sense of this world. It is a self-portrait of us as nature.
I earned an associate degree in art from MDC in 1992 and an associate in radiologic science in 1994. I then went to study at Arte Sotto un Tetto and at the Florence Academy of Art in Florence, Italy in 1996. I have a practice lasting close to 30 years. I have shown my work widely throughout the country, mounting more than 17 solo exhibitions and participating in numerous
group shows in the past three decades. I have been represented by LNS gallery, Arte Cernuda, and C&A Fine art in Miami, as well as Espacio 304 in Puerto Rico. I have participated in museum group shows like in the PAMM Museum in Miami, and the Four Arts Society in West Palm Beach Fl. and Casa de las Americas in San Juan Puerto Rico. I currently have a solo exhibition at the Art and History Maitland Museum titled “Future Nature,” accompanied by a 10-foot outdoor sculpture in the Museum’s Garden.

Multi-disciplinary visual artist working with painting, ceramics, sounds and large outdoor sculptures. My work has been featured in more than 15 solo shows and in group exhibitions across Miami, New York, and Puerto Rico, including both galleries and museums. Recent work explores the intersection of ecology, human fragility, and spiritual introspection through the lens of Still Life and magical realism, drawing inspiration from Surrealist René Magritte and the Dutch Vanitas tradition of the 17th century, creating a dialogue that bridges historical artistic practices with contemporary ecological concerns.
